The difference between 5083 and 5086 aluminum plates for marine grade ships

2024-06-12 17:00:23

When we talk about marine-grade aluminum plates, we always have to mention 5083 aluminum plates and 5086 aluminum plates. Since marine ships are immersed in seawater for a long time, the requirements for the materials of ship plates and sheet metal parts are very high. They are required to have excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, excellent welding performance and good forming performance. 5083 aluminum plates and 5086 aluminum plates are two aluminum alloys commonly used in marine engineering and shipbuilding. They both belong to the 5000 series aluminum alloys, and the main alloying element is magnesium, which has excellent corrosion resistance and high strength.

Common points between 5083 and 5086 aluminum plates for marine grade ships

5083 aluminum plates and 5086 aluminum plates both belong to the 5 series AL-Mg alloys, with the same main alloying elements. Both have excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability, and are widely used in shipbuilding, including hulls, decks, ship sides and bottom outer plates.

Differences between 5083 and 5086 aluminum plates for marine grade ships

Although 5083 and 5086 aluminum plates have the same main alloying elements and similar material properties, there are still some differences.

Differences between 5083 and 5086 aluminum plates for marine grade ships

  • Chemical composition

The main alloying elements of 5083 aluminum plate include aluminum, magnesium, manganese, etc., while the main alloying elements of 5086 aluminum plate include aluminum, magnesium, iron, etc. A trace amount of beryllium is also added to 5083 aluminum plate to reduce the crack tendency of the ingot and improve the surface quality of the rolled plate.

  • Strength

5083 aluminum plate has slightly higher strength than 5086 aluminum plate. 5083 aluminum is the strongest non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy. 5086 aluminum can be strengthened by strain hardening and cold working, but its strength is still slightly inferior to 5083 aluminum plate.

  • Weldability

The weldability of 5086 aluminum plate is slightly better than that of 5083 aluminum plate. Both 5083 and 5086 aluminum plates are suitable for a variety of welding methods. 5086 aluminum plate is particularly suitable for arc welding, and can maintain most of its mechanical strength after welding, and has good corrosion resistance in seawater.
